DC: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has confirmed that Russia was behind the cyberattack that hacked into various US government departments, in what officials have said could be, “An equivalent to Pearl Harbor.”
“Now we can say very clearly that it was the Russians who engaged in this activity,” Pompeo said during an interview on Friday.
The massive attack which went undetected for nearly nine months breached cyber security in Departments of Homeland Security, Energy, Justice and Treasury as well as many American companies including tech giant Microsoft.
A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied the allegation, stressing that their country does not engage in “offensive operations in cyber domain”.
Democrats have severely criticized President Donald Trump, who has not spoken about the matter as yet, and demanded harsh retribution. Democrat senator Chris Coons said on American TV that it was hard to distinguish the cyberattack from an act of war.
