Post Nawaz shocked by Gilani but still hopeful of Musharraf trial

    By Hamid Mir

PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has said he was disappointed by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani but still hoped that former president Pervez Musharraf will definitely face treason charges in a Pakistani court of law one day.

He made it clear to his party that he was not part of any deal struck before the resignation of Musharraf. He also claimed that US diplomat Richard Holbrook and British diplomat Mark Lyall Grant never asked him to forget Musharraf and he is not bound by any deal.

Nawaz expressed these views during a meeting with his close associates and friends on Friday. He discussed the recent statement of Gilani in the National Assembly in which the prime minister had stated that let the opposition comes up with a unanimous resolution for Musharraf’s trial. Nawaz said this statement tantamount to indirectly supporting the former president because everyone knows that a unanimous resolution is hard to come by as there many MPs sympathetic to Musharraf. Nawaz informed his associates that “I was not expecting this kind of statement from Gilani. He broke my heart”.

Nawaz Sharif inquired from Chaudhry Nisar why the prime minister had asked for tabling a resolution in the house because he felt there was no need of any resolution. Nisar explained that actually it was Attorney-General Latif Khosa who told the media immediately after July 31 verdict of the Supreme Court that the government can try Musharraf under treason charges after a resolution adopted by the National Assembly with simple majority. Nisar said he only commented on the statement of Latif Khosa and assured the treasury benches that if the government cannot table that resolution then the PML-N can do it.

Nisar also informed Nawaz that initially Gilani was ready to act against Musharraf after a resolution passed by the house with simple majority. It was expected that more than 250 members of the National Assembly were ready to support the resolution, adding the PML-Q had hinted at staying away from the voting and only MQM MNAs were determined to oppose it. Gilani had even said the Army will not oppose the trial of Musharraf but suddenly he changed his position on Wednesday after some “invisible pressure”.

Nawaz told his party members that “I am not part of any deal struck before the resignation of Musharraf last year”. He said neither the Saudi nor any western government asked him not to demand for a trial of Musharraf.

In response to a question, Nawaz clearly said British diplomat Mark Lyall Grant never discussed any deal with him before the resignation of Musharraf. He said Grant met him a few days ago again and just wanted to know my views about Musharraf. Grant never asked anything more and informed him that he is going to the United Nations as the new British envoy. Nawaz also said Holbrook, too, had not discussed the future of Musharraf with him and same is the case with Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Nawaz also discussed his future political strategy with the senior party leaders and decided the PML-N would not give up the demand of Musharraf’s trial. The PML-N leadership was in contact with many senior Baloch leaders and they want Nawaz Sharif to also support their demand for the registration of a case against Musharraf on charges of murdering Akbar Bugti. Nawaz said he would meet Baloch leaders soon and will assure his support to them.
